New Balance is known to have a knack for making foam that feels immediately convincing underfoot, and the Ellipse lives up to that expectation. Positioned as an everyday running shoe, it is comfortable, fun, and might very likely make runners want to come back for more. On the first two counts, it clearly delivers. But the third is where things get a little more nuanced.
For the Ellipse, New Balance has used a mix of textiles across the upper that gives it a premium, put-together appearance. The design is thoughtful, and that care extends to the fit, which is relaxed and accommodating without feeling sloppy. It runs true to size, and runners with wider feet — like mine — or higher arches will find the toe box particularly welcoming. There’s room, which is harder to get right than it sounds.
