Historic first: Church of England names woman archbishop; conservatives push back

Dame Sarah Mullally will become the first woman to lead the Church of England. She was named Archbishop of Canterbury-designate. Her confirmation is set for January 2026. Mullally previously served as Bishop of London and chief nursing officer. The appointment received praise from Hindu leaders. However, a conservative Anglican group expressed opposition to her leadership.
