Indian equities failed to hold on to early gains on Tuesday, with profit-taking at higher levels weighing on the market amid an uncertain geopolitical backdrop and positioning ahead of the weekly expiry. IT stocks led the decline, while softer crude oil prices and easing bond yields provided some support.

The Nifty50 ended at 23,329, down 85.30 points, or 0.36%, while the Sensex settled 329.91 points, or 0.44%, lower at 74,529.08.

On the technical front, the Nifty50 formed a bearish engulfing pattern on the daily chart, signalling waning bullishness. Rupak De, senior technical analyst at LKP Securities, said market sentiment remained weak, with immediate support at 23,300. A break below this level could pull the index towards 23,000, while 23,400 remains the immediate resistance. A sustained move above that level could take the index towards 23,600 and higher.
