The Amritsar police commissionerate arrested three operatives of gangster-turned-terrorist Lakhbir Singh Landa. One of them was injured in an encounter after he tried to flee from the police custody.
The injured was identified as Jagroop Singh Charna of Talwandi Mohar Singh in Patti, Tarn Taran. The other two were: Jugraj Singh, alias Gazi, and Shamsher Singh, alias Shera, both residents of the same village.
Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar said the police had information that Landa was using his associates in Punjab to obtain phone numbers of prominent businessmen. These persons were then asked to pay extortion money. The police received inputs that a businessman from Amritsar had received an extortion call in Landa’s name. Acting swiftly, the CIA staff managed to arrest three persons.
Jagroop’s disclosure lead to recovery of one .32 bore pistol and two live cartridges. While returning after the recovery, Jagroop tried to grab ASI Pawan Kumar’s service pistol in his bid to escape. Another police personnel opened fire to thwart Jagroop’ attempt, thereby injuring him.
