Farmers across the country, including Haryana and Punjab, staged tractor marches on Sunday, January 26, pressing for 13 demands, with the primary focus on a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) on crops. The United Kisan Morcha (non-political), Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, and United Kisan Morcha, who are protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders, was held near BJP leaders' homes and malls from 12 noon to 1:30 pm. Meanwhile, today is the 62nd day of the hunger strike of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is fasting at the Khanauri border. Currently, after receiving glucose and medical treatment, his health is improving. Tractor march at Shambhu and Khanauri borders Farmers protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders carried out a peaceful tractor march. The agitation also stressed the 62nd day of farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s hunger strike. His health, which had deteriorated multiple times, has shown improvement after medical attention. Farmer Movement-2 and attempt of march to Delhi On February 13, 2024, farmers launched Farmer Movement-2 under the banner of United Kisan Morcha and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha. Despite three meetings with central ministers and Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann, no resolution was achieved. When farmers attempted to march to Delhi, they were stopped by barricades set up by Haryana police at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders. The situation escalated on February 21, 2024, when young farmer Shubhkaran Singh was shot dead during a protest at the Khanauri border. The case remains in the Punjab and Haryana High Court, with the family demanding a CBI investigation. Continued protests The Haryana government faced legal action for blocking roads with barricades. The Punjab and Haryana High Court ordered the barricades' removal on July 10, 2024, prompting the Haryana government to appeal to the Supreme Court. Tractor march in Jalandhar In Bhogpur, Jalandhar, farmers organized a tractor march that stretched to the Kishangarh area. Farmer leader Parminder Singh stated that the tractors would soon be directed toward Delhi as part of a larger agitation planned by the Samyukt Kisan Morcha (SKM). He stressed on unity of farmers, laborers, shopkeepers, and factory workers in their fight against attempts to enforce anti-farmer laws. Patiala farmers protests at MPs’ residence Farmers in Patiala conducted tractor marches at nine locations, including Samana, Rajpura, and Devi Garh. Balraj Joshi, a farmer leader, said these marches protest the central government's failure to address farmers' concerns. He criticised misinformation campaigns about MSP and vowed to intensify the protests by demonstrating outside MPs' residences. A farmer conference is also planned in Jind on February 13. Protests in Ambala, Ludhiana and Mohali In Ambala, members of BKU (Shaheed Bhagat Singh) held a tractor march, surrounding BJP minister Anil Vij’s house amidst tight security. Ludhiana saw a march organized by the Indian Farmers’ and Labor Union, culminating at a Reliance gas plant, where farmers raised slogans against the government. Farmers gathered at the Barodi Toll Plaza in Mohali, expressing anger at the central government for not providing a legal guarantee for MSP and accusing it of undermining Punjab's interests, including attempts to remove Chandigarh from Punjab. Dallewal’s hunger strike Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal began a hunger strike on November 26, 2024, to pressure the government into accepting farmers' demands. The Punjab government forcibly detained the farmer leader and admitted him to DMC Hospital in Ludhiana. After this, the farmers got agitated. A meeting was held between farmer leaders and government officials. On December 1, farmer leader Dallewal was discharged. After this, he came to the Khanauri border. His health has deteriorated 4 to 5 times so far. The matter is also ongoing in the Supreme Court. There have been 10 hearings. Recently, the Punjab government presented Dallewal's medical report in court, claiming that his health is continuously improving. Following his deteriorating health, the United Kisan Morcha extended its support during a Mahapanchayat in Moga on January 9, 2025, bringing together multiple farmer unions. Government officials engage in discussions On January 19, 2025, central officials, led by Joint Secretary Priyaranjan, met with Dallewal at the Khanauri border. They expressed concern over farmers' issues and invited representatives for a meeting on February 14 in Chandigarh. Following this, Dallewal agreed to medical treatment, but the agitation continues. Tractor marches across nation Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Pandher declared that tractor marches were successful across 12-13 states, reflecting widespread discontent.
