Former Punjab Chief Minister and MP from Jalandhar, Charanjit Singh Channi, has demanded the Bharat Ratna for former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh. He made this demand during the ongoing budget session in Parliament. Channi said that India progressed under Dr Singh's leadership, but he did not receive due respect when he left office. He believes that now is the time to honour him with the country’s highest civilian award. On Kumbh Mela stampede Channi also spoke about problems in Jalandhar. He raised concerns about the city's bypass and its development. He also mentioned the recent stampede at the Kumbh Mela. Channi blamed mismanagement for the tragedy. He demanded that the government apologise in Parliament for the incident. Disrespect to Ambedkar Channi raised the issue of an incident in Amritsar, where Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar was allegedly disrespected. He accused the BJP of being responsible for this act. He stated that Ambedkar is not just for Dalits but for all Indians. He said the BJP is using divisive politics to spread hatred. Channi also blamed Home Minister Amit Shah for the situation. He claimed that Shah’s statements encouraged people to act against Ambedkar’s legacy. He mentioned that after such remarks, a person climbed onto Dr Ambedkar’s statue in Amritsar and attempted to damage it. BJP's response The BJP leaders strongly objected to Channi’s claims. They said their party had sent a delegation to investigate the matter. According to them, the Aam Aadmi Party and Congress were responsible for the incident, not the BJP.
