The court of Additional District and Sessions Judge has granted one-month extension to the special investigation team (SIT) probing the Hari Nau murder case. Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh and designated terrorist Arsh Dalla are among the 17 accused in the case.
The SIT had initially requested 90-day extension for probing the case registered under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA). However, defence counsel opposed the plea saying the second extension request by the SIT aimed at harassing the accused by prolonging their detention.
Last month, the court had allowed one-month extension, which is set to expire on February 12. The counsels for the accused contended that there had been no substantive progress in the SIT probe during the extended period. The SIT had failed to take any steps to make Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh join the investigation, despite knowing that he was currently lodged in the Dibrugarh Jail (Assam), they added.
Alleging political interference in the case, the defence argued that the SIT failed to provide any justification for the delay in investigating Amritpal Singh’s involvement. While the SIT had sought a 90-day extension, the court limited the extension to one month.
The case relates to the murder of Gurpreet Singh, who was shot dead by three assailants at Hari Nau village in Faridkot on October 10, 2024.
