Gill, Iyer, Axar’s half-centuries help India down England:Harshit Rana shines on debut; Men in Blue win by 4 wickets to take 1-0 lead in series

Team India dished out a clinical display in the first ODI against England, recording a four-wicket win against England in the first ODI of the three-match series at the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA) Stadium in Nagpur on Thursday (February 6). Shreyas Iyer scored a half-century on his return to international cricket, after debutant Harshit Rana and star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja picked 3 wickets each. Having won the toss, England captain Jos Buttler chose to bat first as India were jolted by the absence of Virat Kohli who sustained a sore knee. While Ben Duckett and Phil Salt started in typical Bazball fashion, recording a 75-run partnership, England collapsed to 111/4 later. Salt was run out after a mix-up with Duckett, having scored 43 runs. Harshit got his maiden ODI wicket when he got rid of Ben on 32 runs, Yashasvi Jaiswal took a brilliant catch running backwards. Joe Root was dismissed LBW by Jadeja, while Harry Brook was caught after a three-ball duck. Jos Buttler and Jacob Bethell scored their respective half-centuries to revive England's innings but once Axar Patel removed the England captain on 52, it was all downhill for the visitors. Jadeja sent Bethell back to the dugout while Mohammed Shami castled Brydon Carse, and despite some late hitting from Jofra Archer, England were all out for 248 runs. Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer's fifties down England Yashasvi could only score 15 runs on his ODI debut as Archer drew first blood for the Three Lions. Rohit's lean patch continued as he was caught on 2 runs, but Gill and Iyer stabilised the Indian innings with a brilliant partnership. Iyer's 59-run knock came to an end courtesy of Bethell but Gill continued to punish the visitors. Gill struggled with cramps but ended up as the top-scorer of the Indian innings, finishing with 87 off 96 to bag the Player of the Match award. Batting at number 3 with Virat Kohli missing out due to a sore knee, Gill registered a 108-run stand with Axar Patel who earned a promotion in batting order and impressed with his 52 runs of 47 deliveries. Eventually, the Men in Blue reached their target with more than 11 overs to spare.Original Article
