In a rather bizarre incident, water spray was used to help the fans cope up with the heat wave while they enjoyed the cricket match in the India vs England 2nd ODI at the Barabati Stadium in Cuttack on Sunday (February 9). While the incident did attract a few eyeballs, given the weird nature of it, this is not the only strange incident that has unfolded on the cricket field. Let us take a deep dive and look at some of the odd incidents that have happened in the past. Ant Attack This incident occurred during the third T20I match between South Africa and India at the SuperSport Park at Centurion in 2024. A plethora of flying ants, mostly flying around the floodlights, hampered the match proceedings in the second innings when South Africa were chasing a mammoth total of 220 as many were flying across the cricket field, making the players uncomfortable. The on-field umpires decided to stop the match proceedings for 30 minutes after consulting with both the captains. The underarm ball controversy During an ODI match between Australia and New Zealand in 1981, something uncanny happened that is still debated to today's date. At the time, the Kiwis required just six runs to tie the game against the Kangaroos. Then Australian skipper Greg Chappell instructed his brother Trevor to bowl an underarm delivery to comfortably ensure a win and he did so. This sparked outrage amongst the New Zealand players questioning the act. But the catch here was that bowling an underarm delivery was not considered illegal at the time. Changes have been made to curb this situation over the years passing by but this event proved to be a dent in sportsmanship. Andrew Symonds the wrestler This incident is less unusual and more funny. In 2008, an ODI match was played between India and Australia in Brisbane. Late Australian all-rounder Andrew Symonds was at the crease. But instead of facing the bowler, he found an opponent who came out of nowhere, a pitch intruder entirely naked. Mostly what happens is that players ignore these issues and focus on the game as the match presence for both the sides playing goes for a toss. Symonds took the matter into his own hands and pounded the individual down using his shoulder. Symonds was appreciated for the unusual act that he did from the crowd.Original Article
