Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla, has offered to buy artificial intelligence company OpenAI for $97.4 billion (₹84.61 lakh crore) through his investment firm. Musk’s lawyer, Mark Toberoff, said that Musk, along with his AI startup xAI and investment firms, wants to acquire OpenAI. They plan to turn it into a non-profit research lab with a charitable mission. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman rejected the offer. In a post on X, he wrote, “No thank you, but if you (Musk) want, we will buy Twitter (now X) for $9.74 billion (₹8.46 lakh crore).” OpenAI was launched on December 11, 2015, by Elon Musk, Sam Altman, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, Wojciech Zaremba, and John Schulman. In 2024, OpenAI raised ₹57,167 crore, bringing its valuation to ₹13.60 lakh crore. The company now operates on a 'capped-profit' model, meaning investors can only earn limited returns. Popular products of OpenAI OpenAI launched GPT-3 in 2020, a language model capable of understanding and generating human-like text. In January 2021, OpenAI introduced DALL·E, a generative AI model that creates images based on user-provided text. In November 2022, OpenAI released ChatGPT, its most well-known product. It was considered the world's most advanced chatbot, capable of answering queries on various topics. Within just five days of launch, ChatGPT surpassed 1 million users, making it the fastest-growing AI-based app. Musk bought Twitter for $44 billion Elon Musk acquired Twitter (now X) on October 27, 2022, for $44 billion. At today's value, this amounts to over ₹3.6 lakh crore. Since the acquisition, Musk has introduced several major changes to the platform. His goal is to transform X into an 'everything app'. After taking over Twitter, Musk removed four top executives: CEO Parag Agrawal, Finance Chief Ned Segal, Legal Executive Vijaya Gadde, and Sean Edgett. At the time, Twitter had about 7,500 employees, but the workforce has now been reduced to around 2,500. Musk and Altman clash over the $500 billion Stargate project The proposed $500 billion Stargate AI infrastructure project, backed by former US President Donald Trump, has brought Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman into direct conflict. Musk has raised doubts about SoftBank’s role in the project, while Altman has defended it, calling Musk’s concerns incorrect. Altman is a partner in the project, whereas Musk plays a key role in the Trump administration.Original Article
