Adani fraud case:US lawmakers write letter to AG Pam Bondi demanding probe against Biden officials over ‘foolish decision’ to prosecute Adani Group

Six US lawmakers have called for an investigation into the Biden administration's Justice Department regarding its actions against the Adani Group. In a letter to newly appointed Attorney General Pam Bondi, they argued that the DOJ's actions have harmed US-India relations. Lawmakers Lance Gooden, Pat Fallon, Mike Haridopolos, Brandon Gill, William R. Timmons, and Brian Babin criticized the decision, calling it a misguided move that could damage ties with India. They labeled the proceedings as a misleading campaign. Allegations Against Adani Group Last year, industrialist Gautam Adani and eight others were accused of fraudulent activities amounting to billions of rupees. According to the charge sheet, renewable energy projects in India were allegedly acquired through improper means, with plans to bribe government officials with $250 million (approximately ₹2,029 crore). The accused were also charged with misleading American investors and banks. This case, involving Adani Green Energy Limited and another firm, was filed in the Federal Court of New York on October 24, 2024. However, the charge sheet did not confirm that any bribes were actually paid but rather that there was an intent to offer them, which allegedly violated the US Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The case was heard in court on November 20, 2024. US Interests Have Been Harmed The lawmakers argued that the DOJ's actions unfairly targeted individuals who contributed billions to the US economy and created thousands of jobs. They asserted that the move was an attempt to disrupt the US economy and urged Pam Bondi to investigate the Biden administration's DOJ for selective legal actions that could strain US-India relations. Lawmakers Stated In the Letter: “This action has targeted individuals who have contributed billions of dollars to our economy, creating thousands of jobs in the United States. The decision attempts to disrupt the US economy and represents a significant blow to American interests. “We urge you (Pam Bondi) to investigate the Biden administration's Justice Department. This department has selectively pursued certain cases while ignoring others, putting our relationship with a key ally like India at risk.” China Could Gain Control Over the Global Supply Chain The lawmakers emphasised that the US and India share a relationship based on mutual respect. They noted that former President Trump always prioritized strong ties between the two economic and military powers. They warned that such actions not only damage US-India relations but also provide an opportunity for countries like China to undermine the American economy and tighten their grip on the global supply chain through initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative. Adani Group Denies Allegations On November 21, the Adani Group dismissed the accusations as baseless. In an official statement, the company stated: “The allegations made by the US Department of Justice and the US Securities and Exchange Commission against the directors of Adani Green Energy Limited are unfounded. We categorically deny them.” Adani's Net Worth Fell by ₹1 Lakh Crore Following the news, Gautam Adani's net worth fell by ₹1.02 lakh crore. Meanwhile, Kenya canceled two major deals with the Adani Group—one for power transmission and another for airport expansion—worth ₹21,422 crore in total.Original Article
