‘Kohli doesn’t need captaincy title to lead’- Bobat:RCB’s Director of Cricket reveals India legend was considered for the role

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) have unveiled Rajat Patidar as their captain for the 2025 Indian Premier League season, whilst emphasising Virat Kohli's continuing leadership influence within the team. Strategic decision Mo Bobat, RCB's Director of Cricket, revealed at a Bengaluru press conference that while Kohli was considered for the role, the management had specific reasons for their choice. "Andy [Flower] and I felt blessed we had many options. We were keen on an Indian option because someone with local insight is helpful for us," Bobat explained. Kohli's evolving role In a significant endorsement of both the incoming captain and Kohli's influence, Bobat emphasised the former captain's natural leadership qualities. "Virat doesn't need a captaincy title to lead. It just comes naturally to him. He leads as an example with the bat, in the field and sets the tone with his energy," Bobat said. Patidar's credentials The 31-year-old Patidar brings substantial leadership experience, having captained Madhya Pradesh in both the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. His recent performance in domestic T20 cricket, scoring 428 runs at an average of 61 and a strike-rate of 186.08, underlines his capabilities. Team unity Kohli, who led RCB for 143 matches between 2013 and 2021, has thrown his full support behind Patidar. "Myself and the other team members will be right behind you, Rajat," Kohli stated in a franchise video release. "The way you have grown in this franchise and performed, you've made a place in the hearts of all RCB fans. This is very well deserved." What lies ahead for RCB? The appointment marks a new chapter for RCB, with Bobat confident that Patidar will benefit from Kohli's presence. "Pretty sure Rajat will lean on him too. Virat had so much energy for the decision. He knows Rajat is deserving for this captaincy," Bobat concluded.Original Article
