The Punjab government is taking significant steps to address mental health issues, including drug rehabilitation, farmer suicides due to debt, and depression among deported youth. In line with this, the state is preparing to introduce a comprehensive mental health policy, with groundwork already underway. Health Minister Balbir Singh stated that the policy will be formulated with inputs from multiple stakeholders and will soon be presented to the cabinet for approval. The goal is to make Punjab a 'vibrant Punjab' by ensuring mental well-being. Expert consultations and inclusive approach To ensure a well-rounded strategy, consultations are being held with ministers, secretaries, health officials, and de-addiction specialists. Experts from PGI, AIIMS, private doctors, NGOs, and police officers will also contribute. A special program has been organised to collect opinions from these stakeholders. The policy will focus on key mental health challenges, including increasing suicide rates among farmers and youth, particularly those returning from abroad after deportation. Efforts will be made to help them reintegrate into society and overcome depression. Strategy for effective solutions The policy will investigate the root causes of mental health issues and formulate targeted solutions. The state government aims to provide structured support to deported youth to help them rebuild their lives. CM Bhagwant Mann has assured that all necessary assistance will be provided to ensure their successful reintegration. The initiative reflects Punjab’s commitment to improving mental health and overall well-being in the state.Original Article
