Apoorva Lakhia reveals Amitabh Bachchan’s unforgettable lesson:’On a 100mm lens, my presence makes everything else irrelevant in the frame,’ Big B to nervous director

Director Apoorva Lakhia recently shared a fascinating experience about working with Amitabh Bachchan, highlighting both his initial nervousness and a valuable lesson learned from the megastar. In a conversation with Friday Talkies, Lakhia recalled his early directing days with Bachchan. What caught his attention was the actor's unique on-set behavior. Unlike other stars who preferred their vanity vans between shots, Bachchan would sit outside, carefully observing everything. This intense observation from the legendary actor would make Lakhia anxious, constantly wondering about Bachchan's thoughts. A significant incident unfolded during a shoot in Bangkok. While filming a scene, someone accidentally ran through the frame in the background. Concerned about perfection, Lakhia suggested a retake to Bachchan, who simply asked 'why?' and agreed with an 'okay' after hearing the explanation. Post-shoot, Bachchan approached Lakhia with a technical question about the lens being used. When Lakhia confirmed it was a 100mm lens, Bachchan offered a perspective that would transform the director's approach to filmmaking. Referencing Mumbai's Chandan theater, Bachchan explained, 'On a 70mm screen, when Amitabh Bachchan is shot at 100mm, do you think anyone will notice who passed in the background?' His point was clear – when the audience's focus is on a powerful foreground element, especially someone as commanding as Bachchan, minor background distractions become irrelevant.Original Article by Dainik Bhaskar
