A recent Lancet study revealed that eight people in Tamil Nadu’s Tirupattur district died in 2023 from neuromelioidosis contracted at a dental clinic. The outbreak, linked to unsterile practices, involved a contaminated saline bottle used during dental procedures. Researchers found the bacteria, Burkholderia pseudomallei, entered through nerve pathways, leading to rapid and severe brain infections.
