A powerful 8.8-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula triggered tsunami warnings across the Pacific, sending Steller sea lions fleeing to higher ground as waves crashed into the coast. While waves reached up to 4 meters in Kamchatka and impacted Japan, Alaska, and the US West Coast, little major damage was reported, though some injuries and flooding occurred.
