Centre-farmers talks remain inconclusive:6th meeting scheduled in Chandigarh on Feb 22; Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan to attend

A meeting between the United Farmers Front (Non-Political), 28 leaders of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha (KMM), and Union Minister Prahlad Joshi was held in Chandigarh on Friday. The discussion, which lasted over three hours, focused on 11 issues, including the Minimum Support Price (MSP) guarantee. However, no decision was reached. Farmers warned the central government not to take their demand for MSP lightly. The next meeting will be held on 22 February with Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. Farmers' protest at borders Since 13 February, farmers have been protesting at the Shambhu and Khanauri borders of Haryana and Punjab. Their main demand is a legal guarantee for MSP, along with other issues. Leaders' statements after the meeting Union Minister Prahlad Joshi – He stated that the discussion was conducted in a positive atmosphere, and the government listened to all concerns. He mentioned that farmers were informed about budgetary decisions related to agriculture and confirmed the next round of talks. Farmer Leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal – He called the discussion positive but emphasised that the government must take farmers’ demands seriously. Sarwan Singh Pandher dismissed claims that implementing MSP would cost Rs 1 lakh crore annually. Punjab Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khuddian – He assured full support from the Punjab government and urged the centre to act swiftly. Dallewal arrived in an ambulance Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who has been on a hunger strike for 82 days, arrived at the meeting in an ambulance and was taken inside on a stretcher. Five rounds of talks so far Since the protests began, five meetings have been held between farmers and the central government in Chandigarh, but no agreement has been reached. 3 important points related to the movement – 1. High Court ordered Shambhu border to open, Haryana moved SC The Haryana Police blocked the Shambhu border, prompting Ambala traders to file a petition in the High Court, which ordered the reopening of the border. The Haryana government challenged this in the Supreme Court, where 10 hearings have taken place. A retired judge was appointed for mediation, but the protest continues. 2. Attempts to march to Delhi blocked Farmers planned to enter Delhi but were denied permission. A group of 101 farmers was stopped at the Shambhu border. Attempts to march on 6, 8, and 14 December were also prevented by police, who used tear gas. 3. Dallewal’s hunger strike reached SC Jagjit Singh Dallewal began an indefinite hunger strike after transferring his property to his family. He was detained by Punjab Police on 26 November but released on 1 December due to farmer pressure. The Supreme Court held 10 hearings on his health.
