Former Congress legislator Kulbir Singh Zira on Tuesday claimed that some unidentified persons opened fire on his car the last night when he was on his way to Zira town from Ferozepur.
Zira, who is also the Ferozepur Congress Committee president, said the incident took place near Sher Khan village, around 12 km away from the district headquarters.
The former Congress legislator claimed that he was followed by some unidentified persons travelling in another car.
Zira said the assailants stopped their vehicle near Sher Khan village and started firing on his car.
“Six rounds were fired on our car,” the former legislator said, adding that he had received threats from gangsters in the past too but no action was taken by the police in this regard despite complaint.
“The state government has failed to provide a safe and secure environment to people. Even police stations are being attacked,” the former legislator said referring to a string of blasts outside police stations in Punjab in recent months.
SP (D) Randhir Kumar said the police had received a call on emergency number 112 in this regard. “The police are verifying the facts and investigating the matter,” he said.
Mann should resign: LoP
Commenting on it, state Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring slammed the Aam Aadmi Party government in Punjab over the law and order situation.
“The firing on Kulbir Singh Zira is not just an attack on an individual, it is a glaring example of how governance has collapsed under Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann,” said Warring.
The state Congress presidentsaid how could people of the state feel secure when even politicians having police security are being targeted.
Punjab has turned into a haven for gangsters and criminals, he alleged.
The Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Punjab Assembly, Partap Singh Bajwa, too sought the Chief Minister’s resignation over the suspected grenade blast outside a police post in Amritsar on Monday night.
“This is the 11th such incident in Punjab since mid-November last year. However, the Punjab Police, which comes under the jurisdiction of the Home Ministry led by Mann, remained inefficient in preventing such incidents. Handling the Home Department is a full-time job, yet Mann seems to have taken it casually. If he cannot perform, he has no right to stay in the position,” Bajwa added. — TNS
