Govt extends India’s Chief Economic Adviser’s tenure:Centre expands Nageswaran’s term by 2 more years; Finmin notifies post appointment committee’s approval

The Central Government has extended India's Chief Economic Adviser, (CEA), Dr V Anantha Nageswaran's tenure by two more years till March 31, 2027 or until further order, whichever earlier. The Ministry of Finance notified about the same after securing the approval of the Union Cabinet's appointment committee regarding extension of his tenure. According to the notification, the incumbent CEA has been serving the government of India on a contract basis. His term can be terminated before expiry. When was Nageswaran appointed as India's CEA? Nageswaran was appointed to the position back in 2022 and has since then continued to be at the helm. He recently presented India's Economic Survey for the year 2024-25 on January 31, 2025. Prior to taking over as CEA, he was a part-time member of the Economic Advisory Council to India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi from 2019 to 2021. He has been a teacher, author and consultant with prestigious organisations across the globe. He had succeeded Krishnamurthy Subramanian to the post of India's CEA back in 2022. He advises the government on economic matters and is responsible for the preparation of the country's Economic survey.
