The Congress announced Pargat Singh’s appointment on 2 October 2026, with immediate effect. Sachin Pilot took charge as the party’s General Secretary in-charge of Punjab in September 2026.

Regarded as one of the finest defenders Indian hockey has produced, Pargat Singh captained India at the 1992 Barcelona and 1996 Atlanta Olympics and was India’s flag-bearer at the Atlanta Games. A recipient of the Arjuna Award, he has represented Jalandhar Cantonment in the Punjab Legislative Assembly since 2012, and served as Punjab’s Cabinet Minister for School and Higher Education, Sports and Youth Services, and NRI Affairs in 2021–22.
