India’s historic free trade agreement (FTA) with the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) is expected to come into effect by September 2025, according to Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal. The Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA), signed on March 10, 2024, commits EFTA members—Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland—to $100 billion in investments over 15 years. In return, India will lower or eliminate duties on Swiss watches, chocolates, and cut and polished diamonds. Goyal, on an official visit to Switzerland, noted overwhelming enthusiasm from Swiss companies for investing in pharma, cybersecurity, and machinery manufacturing sectors. With parliamentary approvals in place and the Swiss objection window closing on July 10, the deal is on track for a September rollout. Will this be a game-changer for India’s manufacturing and exports?
