‘India’s chances of winning Champions Trophy reduce by 30%’:Ravi Shastri on Jasprit Bumrah’s absence, urges BCCI not to rush back pacer

Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri urged the BCCI to not rush back Jasprit Bumrah who is yet to recover from the back issues he suffered against Australia. Bumrah was ruled out on the last day of the fifth Test against Australia at SCG with back spasm. The star pacer had previously suffered a relapse of his back injury which led to a long-term absence, and Shastri advised the Indian management to avoid a repeat of the past mistakes. With the Champions Trophy set to kick off on 19 February, Bumrah faces a race against time with his fitness. The Indian pacer reported to the National Cricket Academy (NCA) on 2 February to undergo scans on his injury, but two days later, BCCI silently removed his name from the ODI series squad against England, having picked him earlier only for the last ODI. Bumrah absence reduces India's chances of winning Champions Trophy Shastri said that Bumrah's absence would considerably reduce India's chances of winning the Champions Trophy by nearly 30% but it will be a big risk to play him. "At this stage of his [Bumrah's] career, I think he's too precious to be just called on for one game out of the blue and asked to deliver," Shastri told Sanjana Ganesan on ICC Review. "The expectations will be so much. They'll think that he'll come in straight away and set the world on fire. It's never that easy when you come back from injury," he added. "Bumrah not fit will reduce India's chances [of winning the Champions Trophy] by 30%, literally by 30-35%," Shastri stated further. What Jasprit Bumrah's absence could mean for India Even though BCCI are yet to provide an update on Bumrah, his absence would certainly be a big blow to the Men in Blue. His partner in crime Mohammed Shami is also making a comeback following a long-term ankle injury, therefore, India has Arshdeep Singh as the only other traditional pacer in the 15-member provisional squad. The management would therefore hope that Bumrah can be ready in the nick of time to feature in the latter stages of the Champions Trophy, otherwise, they could turn to Mohammed Siraj.Original Article
