Pakistan hosts first ICC event since 1996 with CT25 launch:Modest Lahore Fort ceremony officially kicks off competition, first match on Feb 19

Pakistan marked its return as an ICC tournament host after nearly three decades with a modest opening ceremony for the 2025 Champions Trophy at the historic Lahore Fort on Sunday (February 16). Historic homecoming The ceremony, featuring members of Pakistan's victorious 2017 Champions Trophy squad, signalled the country's first ICC event hosting since the 1996 World Cup. ICC Champions Trophy ambassador Tim Southee and former South African all-rounder JP Duminy added international presence to the celebrations. Tournament preparations PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi highlighted the country's readiness for the tournament. "Four teams have already arrived in Karachi while England and Australia will land in the next 48 hours," Naqvi said. He emphasised the extensive preparations, noting, "To ensure a world class experience we started the upgradation of Gaddafi and National Stadium. Both venues have been transformed into state-of-the-art facilities in record time." 2017 Champions' reunion The ceremony saw attendance from Pakistan's 2017 trophy-winning team members including Sarfaraz Ahmed, Mohammad Amir, Azhar Ali, Junaid Khan, Shadab Khan, Imad Wasim, Hassan Ali, Mohammad Hafeez and Haris Sohail. Former captain Sarfaraz Ahmed reminisced about their triumph, stating, "Those were unforgettable moments for us after lifting the trophy. I hope the team can defend the title on home soil." Tournament format The 19-day tournament will feature 15 matches, beginning February 19 with hosts Pakistan facing New Zealand at Karachi's National Bank Cricket Stadium. While seven teams will be based in Pakistan, India will play their matches in Dubai. The tournament culminates with the final on March 9. Ceremonial notes Despite the historical significance, the opening ceremony departed from tradition by excluding the customary captains' photoshoot, as some teams are yet to arrive. A second ceremony is scheduled for February 19, coinciding with the tournament's opening match.Original Article
