Punjab Congress claims 30 AAP MLAs in contact:Kejriwal summons all legislators to Delhi, CM Mann postpones cabinet meeting

After the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced defeat in the Delhi Assembly elections, political unrest has also begun in Punjab. Punjab Congress leader Pratap Singh Bajwa has claimed that 30 AAP MLAs are in contact with him. AAP convenor Arvind Kejriwal has summoned Punjab's MLAs to Delhi. He will meet all legislators at Kapurthala House on Tuesday (February 11) at 11 AM. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and all cabinet ministers will also be present. It is believed that this is the reason why the Punjab government’s cabinet meeting, scheduled for February 10, has been postponed. In 2022, elections were held for all 117 assembly seats in Punjab. AAP won 92 seats, Congress secured 18, BJP got 2, Shiromani Akali Dal won 3, and BSP secured 1 seat. The majority mark in Punjab is 59. Even if 30 MLAs leave the party, AAP will still have 62 legislators, ensuring no threat to the government. However, AAP spokesperson Neel Garg stated that the meeting in Delhi is a routine party meeting. The party will decide whether to hold it in Chandigarh or Delhi. Punjab CM and Ministers campaigned in Delhi elections During the Delhi Assembly elections, Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann and the entire AAP leadership campaigned for Kejriwal. Despite their efforts, AAP's seat count dropped from 62 in the previous election to just 22 this time. Meanwhile, the BJP increased its tally from 8 to 48 seats, forming a government in Delhi after 27 years. During the campaign, Punjab’s AAP leaders highlighted their achievements, such as providing 50,000 government jobs, 300 units of free electricity, and opening 850 Mohalla Clinics similar to Delhi’s model. CM Bhagwant Mann was appointed AAP’s star campaigner for Delhi and led several roadshows and rallies. However, AAP suffered losses on several seats where Mann campaigned. Punjab AAP leaders failed to make an impact Despite listing their achievements in Punjab, AAP leaders, including CM Mann, failed to influence voters in Delhi. One of the key reasons for this was the unfulfilled promise of giving ₹1,000 per month to women in Punjab. The opposition has consistently criticized the Punjab government for this failure. This issue impacted AAP in the Lok Sabha elections and may have played a role in their recent Delhi defeat. There is speculation that the Punjab government may announce this scheme in the upcoming budget. AAP’s last remaining stronghold AAP’s decline began in 2024 when it failed to win a single seat in Delhi during the Lok Sabha elections. In Punjab, the party won only 3 out of 13 seats. Now, after losing control of Delhi, Punjab has become crucial for AAP, as it is the only state where the party remains in power. Kejriwal is now focused on ensuring that the Punjab government performs well to regain influence in Delhi and other states. With two years left before the Punjab elections, AAP is avoiding any mistakes. The party is also preparing for the upcoming budget session. Sources suggest that in the upcoming meeting, Kejriwal will gather feedback from Punjab MLAs and discuss the shortcomings of the Delhi election campaign. Before this, he had already met with Delhi’s winning MLAs. AAP’s historic win in 2022 Punjab Elections In the 2022 Punjab Assembly elections, AAP secured a landslide victory, winning 92 out of 117 seats. Congress won 18 seats, BJP got 2, Shiromani Akali Dal won 3, and BSP secured 1 seat. Since then, Punjab has held two by-elections. During this period, one AAP MLA defected to the BJP, and four MLAs became Members of Parliament. After the by-elections, AAP’s total MLAs increased to 95. Recently, Ludhiana West MLA Gurpreet Gogi passed away, leaving the seat vacant.Original Article
