The Ministry of Railways has announced the revision of the divisional jurisdiction under the proposed South Coast Railway (SCoR) retaining the Waltair division in a truncated form and renaming it as Visakhapatnam division.

One part of the Waltair division comprising sections between stations — Palasa-Visakhapatnam-Duvvada, Kuneru-Vizianagaram, Naupada junction-Paralakhemundi, Bobbili junction-Salur, Simhachalam north-Duvvada bypass, Vadalapudi-Duvvada and Visakhapatnam Steel Plant-Jaggayapalem — of around 410 km will be retained in the new Visakhapatnam division.

Orders issued by the Railway Board recently stated that the other part of the Waltair division comprising sections between stations Kottavalasa-Bachelu/ Kirandul, Kuneru-Theruvali junction, Singapur Road-Koraput junction and Paralakhemundi-Gunpur of around 680 km will be converted into a new division with headquarters at Rayagada under East Coat Railway (ECoR).

It means that the South Central Railway (SCR) will be left with just Secunderabad, Hyderabad and Nanded divisions; ScoR will have Visakhapatnam (truncated Waltair), Vijayawada, Guntur and Guntakal divisions and ECoR will have Khurda Road, Sambalpur and Rayagada (new division).

The exact territorial jurisdictions are to be decided after preparation of revised DPR which will take into account the above changes. The following jurisdictional changes between SCR and proposed SCoR have also been made:

The Raichur to Wadi section of 108 km is to be transferred from Guntakal division of proposed SCoR to Secunderabad division of SCR to avoid Wadi becoming an interchange point between the railways – SCR, SCoR and Central Railway. This is to ensure seamless movement of coal rakes through Secunderabad division for two major thermal power plants at Yadlapur and Yermaras in Raichur-Wadi section.

The Vishnupuram to Pagadipili and Vishnupuram to Janpahad sections of 142 km are to be transferred from Guntur division of proposed SCoR to Secunderabad division of SCR to ensure free coal movement from Singareni area to Vishnupuram, to cater to the new thermal power plant at Yadadri.

The Kondapalli to Motumari section of 46 km is to be transferred from Secunderabad division of SCR to Vijayawada division of the proposed SCoR to avoid having the N. Tata Rao power plant and Rayanapadu workshop at the zonal interchange boundary. The SCoR has been directed to send a revised Detailed Project Report and suggested sections change in maps to the Railway Board urgently.
