Smallcap stocks are often associated with high risk and high reward, a trade-off that many retail investors appear willing to embrace. Shareholding data for the June 2026 quarter show that retail investors increased their holdings in nearly 124 smallcap stocks for the fourth consecutive quarter, through June ’26. The trend suggests growing confidence among individual investors. (Retail investors refer to resident individuals holding nominal share capital of up to Rs 2 lakh.)However, rising retail participation has not translated into broad-based gains in smallcap stocks. Performance has remained largely subdued over the past year, with only around 27 stocks delivering positive returns. Yet, even amid the broader weakness, a handful of small-cap stocks have emerged as standout performers. Here, we highlight nine small-cap stocks that have surged between 50% and 150% over the past year while also recording a consistent increase in retail investor ownership over the last four quarters.
