Former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has declared Rohit Sharma as one of "the most selfless cricketers" he has played with crediting the senior batter for revolutionising India's approach in limited-overs cricket. "One thing that I admire the most about Rohit Sharma is that he is not selfish at all. He is one of the most selfless cricketers," Ashwin stated on his Hindi YouTube channel, "Ash Ki Baat." Batting evolution Ashwin highlighted Sharma's willingness to sacrifice personal milestones for team goals, particularly in his aggressive powerplay batting approach. "If he would have been selfish, he would never have batted the way he is batting in the ODIs. He wouldn't go after everything in the powerplay," Ashwin observed. Recent success Under Sharma's leadership, India has reached significant milestones, including the ODI World Cup final and T20I World Cup victory. His transformation from an accumulator in the 2019 World Cup to an aggressive opener in 2023 exemplifies his adaptability. Game evolution "The game has changed and evolved. It is important to realise that the game is bigger than all of us," Ashwin noted, referencing England's influence on ODI cricket between 2015-2019. He added, "I have massive respect for Rohit Sharma. I am also very happy for Rohit and I'm doubly glad that he is showing that this is the way forward." Team-first approach Drawing parallels with cricket legends, Ashwin shared an anecdote about Sachin Tendulkar learning team values from his brother Ajit. He praised Sharma for prioritising team success over personal statistics, breaking from traditional Indian cricket's focus on individual records. "In India, we have often seen players looking out for their averages, stay not out, look at their scores… But we forget, why we all start playing cricket? We wanted to wear the jersey and play for India. And Rohit has showed the way forward," Ashwin emphasised. Looking ahead Ashwin concluded by suggesting that earlier adoption of this aggressive approach might have yielded more ICC trophies for India, while expressing satisfaction with the current direction under Sharma's leadership.Original Article
