The decision of the US government to deport illegal migrants from India has not only dealt a massive financial blow to many families but has also shattered their dreams of a bright future.
Daler Singh, who returned aboard the US military aircraft today, lost all his savings in his quest to go abroad and is now under a huge debt. Hailing from Salempur village near Raja Sansi, Daler had earlier been working as a bus driver, earning only Rs 15,000 per month. Daler who is married and has two children, contacted an agent in Ajnala to go to the US for the better future for his family.
His wife Charanjit Kaur said the agent demanded Rs 40 lakh and assured him a job in America. In all, the family spent about Rs 60 lakh to send him to the US. The agent first sent Daler to Dubai from where he was sent to the US via a donkey route. However, after January 15, the family lost all communication with him, leaving them scared and in despair.
When the administration informed them that Daler had been deported by the US government and was arriving today, they thanked the Almighty.
Another deportee, 26-year-old Sukhjit Kaur from Varpal Kalan village, had travelled to the US to wed her fiancé. However, she was detained soon after crossing the US border and then deported.
Her father, Kabal Singh works in Italy while her mother and brother live in the village here.
One of her relatives said after completing Class XII, Sukhjit had been making efforts to settle in the US.
Ajaydeep Singh, 23, was also among those who were deported from the US.
His grandfather Charanjit Singh said Ajaydeep had left to secure a bright future in the US about 15 days ago, but was detained by the US authorities while crossing border and was deported today.
However, he refrained from any further comment.
