Australia suffered a heavy defeat to Sri Lanka by 174 runs in the second ODI in Colombo on Friday. With this, Sri Lanka won the two match bilateral series, having claimed victory in the first game on 12 February. Both teams now head straight to the Champions trophy in Pakistan and the UAE, later this month. Asitha Fernando started the rout, sending Matt Short, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Travis Head all packing within the first 7 overs, in a fiery spell. Then the spinners came on the wreck havoc. Dunith Wellalage (4-35) and Wanindu Hasaranga (3-23) ran through the Aussie middle and lower order with ease. Steve Smith and Josh Inglis tried to stabilise the innings a bit, with a 46 run partnership but both were dismissed in quick succession. Australia lost their last 7 wickets for 28 runs in a mighty collapse where only 3 batters managed to cross double figures. Australia were out for 107 in 24.2 overs. Kusal Mendis scores century after Sri Lanka bat first Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first. Pathum Nissanka was dismissed cheaply but Nishan Madushka and Kusal Mendis joined hands to build a 98 run partnership until Madushka was dismissed for 51 by Ben Dwarshius. Kamindu Mendis got out soon after to Sean Abbot but captain Charith Asalanka along with Kusal stitched a 94 run partnership. A Janith Liyanage cameo helped Sri Lanka cross the 280 margin as Kusal brought up his century at the other end before getting out to Adam Zampa. Dwarshius, Zampa, Abbot and Aaron Hardie all took a wicket each. Australis were playing a depleted XI, having suffered numerous injuries. Both teams now face their next assignment in the Champions trophy, starting 19 February.Original Article
