Syria Hails U.S. For Lifting Sanctions As ‘Positive Step’ To Help In Post-War Recovery

Syria has welcomed the United States’ decision to lift sweeping sanctions as a “positive step” toward post-war recovery. The move follows the ousting of Bashar al-Assad in December and the rise of a new Islamist-led government in Damascus. On May 23, Washington formally ended its financial and trade restrictions, allowing investments, oil transactions, and humanitarian aid to resume under strict conditions. U.S. officials, including Secretary of State Marco Rubio, emphasized safeguards against terrorism support and committed to protecting minorities. The policy shift coincided with Donald Trump’s meeting with Syria’s new leadership in Riyadh.
