Looks like Tesla is charging its way into India! After a high-profile meeting between Elon Musk and Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the US, Tesla is all set to expand into the Indian market. The electric carmaker is now hiring in India, and it’s a clear sign that the much-anticipated entry is on the horizon. Tesla’s job openings in India Tesla has posted job listings for 13 different positions on LinkedIn, showing the company is preparing for a big launch in India. These roles include customer-facing jobs and back-end positions.
At least five of these roles, such as service technician and advisory positions, are available in Mumbai and Delhi. Other positions like customer engagement manager and delivery operations specialist are specific to Mumbai.
India’s changing stance India and Tesla have had a rocky relationship in the past, mainly due to high import duties on electric vehicles. But things are changing now. India recently reduced the import duty on high-end cars priced above Rs 33 lakh (approximately $40,000) from 110% to 70%. This is a major step that could make Tesla’s entry into India smoother and more attractive. Why India India's electric vehicle (EV) market may be smaller than China’s, but it’s growing. Last year, India saw nearly 100,000 EV sales, compared to China's massive 11 million. Tesla sees this as an opportunity to boost its slowing sales, especially after seeing its first annual drop in EV sales in over 10 years. The Modi-Musk meeting The meeting between PM Modi and Elon Musk was not just about electric cars. It also set the stage for deeper cooperation between India and the US. Trump, who later commented on the meeting, mentioned that Modi had agreed to negotiate on trade issues and increase US military purchases, including the potential sale of F-35 fighter jets. While Musk is closely associated with Trump, it wasn’t clear if their discussions were strictly business-related or linked to Musk’s role with the DOGE team.
Next move of Tesla in India With these job listings, it’s clear Tesla is making its move in India. As the market for electric vehicles continues to grow, Tesla is looking to take advantage of the shift toward greener alternatives. With the right steps in place, including lowering import duties and more job opportunities, Tesla’s expansion could be just around the corner.
