On Thursday, February 13, 2024, India announced a significant cut in its Basic Customs Duty or BCD on bourbon whiskey which is heavily imported from the US. The Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) cut tariff from 150% earlier to 100%. This is expected to reduce the price of Jim Beam brand of the bourbon whisky which is imported from the US. Key points about the tariff cut on bourbon whisky: Before this, the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman while presenting the Budget 2025 had proposed to reduce or completely remove customs duty on several other industrial goods most of which are imported from Washington. Additionally, Sitharaman had proposed to remove seven customs tariff rates for the industrial goods. After implementation, only eight tariff rates, including the ‘zero’ rate would be levied in India.
