The United States has requested assistance from the Indian government in a fraud and bribery case involving the Adani Group. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) informed the Federal Court in New York that efforts are underway to serve notices to industrialist Gautam Adani and his nephew Sagar Adani. The SEC told the court on Tuesday that both individuals are in India, and coordination is being made with India's Ministry of Law to facilitate the notice service. The case, filed in the Federal Court in New York on October 24, 2024, alleges that Gautam Adani and eight others fraudulently secured a renewable energy project in India. They are accused of planning to pay a bribe of ₹2,000 crore to obtain the project. Accusation of raising money by lying to American investors The case, filed in the Federal Court in New York on October 24, 2024, pertains to Adani Green Energy Limited and another firm. It alleges that Gautam Adani and eight others misled American investors and banks to raise funds fraudulently. The accused then allegedly planned to pay a bribe of $250 million (approximately ₹2,029 crore) to government officials to secure renewable energy projects in India. No mention of bribery anywhere According to the chargesheet, this is a violation of America's Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA). The notable thing is that the American Justice Department's document mentioned offering and planning a bribe. It was not stated that a bribe was given. The hearing of the case took place in court on November 20, 2024, and this matter came to light. Adani Group had called all the allegations baseless Adani Group had termed all allegations as baseless. In a statement issued on November 21, the group said, 'The allegations made by the United States Department of Justice and the United States Securities and Exchange Commission against the directors of Adani Green Energy Limited are unfounded. We deny them.' Adani's net worth had fallen by 1 lakh crore After this news, Adani's net worth had decreased by 1.02 lakh crore rupees. Meanwhile, Kenya canceled the power transmission and airport expansion deal with the Adani Group. Both deals were worth 21,422 crore rupees.
